Add oil! Add oil!Thu Jun 5, 2008 2:52pm EDT BEIJING (Reuters) - Beijing organizers are promoting an officially sanctioned chanting routine for Chinese spectators at August's Olympics, state media said Thursday. Incorporating the ubiquitous Chinese sporting chant, "Jiayou" or "add oil," the four-step routine is designed to help spectators cheer in a "smooth and civilized manner" at the August 8-24 Games. The chant will be promoted by television programs, video presentations and squads of cheering volunteers at the venues as well as by the education ministry, the People's Daily reported. The routine begins with "Olympics -- add oil" accompanied by two claps and a double thumbs up, before continuing with "China -- add oil" with two more claps and raised fists.
The "China" and "Olympics" can be replaced to allow support for other countries or individuals, the paper said. [GEE, THANKS!! ] Possible lack of sporting etiquette has been a major concern for city authorities during preparations for the Games and a series of educational programs have been instituted. Users of public transport in the Chinese capital are briefed on the rules of Olympic sports on special television screens, while special projects have taken place in many city schools to teach the children about the history of the Games. Like...to expound upon the numerous ideas in that article which disturb me would take an hour, at least.
I think I've lost my senses of touch and smell just thinking about it. And 3 toenails.

I have a lifelong love of the Olympics that will be ruined by Beijing '08. Just a warning: it won't be pretty.

The Olympics: the fleeting moment of glory of dozens of deservedly obscure sports nobody gives a damn about the rest of the time.

I hate the Olympics, and Vancouver's turn in 2010 might actually prompt me to move.
At least they are a way of embarrassing cities/coutries.

I love the Olympics. I have no idea why. I just wish the Summer ones would return to this continent again so I can go.

additional info (from the Irish Times):
.... The "Let's Go" cheer is officially used to fire up the national team, but can be adapted to inspire other countries. The Beijing Olympic Organising Committee (BOCOG) has taken on 30 cheering squads to show spectators how it is done in the stadiums, the Xinhua news agency reports. The government has previously appointed hundreds of schoolchildren to cheer on the various countries during the games. Individual schools have been ordered to adopt a specific country.
Unsurprisingly, the schools given Japan, China's long-standing regional rival, have an opt-out clause where they get to cheer on China if there is a head-to-head between athletes from both countries.

I am watching the diving trials. Even Beijing can't ruin this. Rebecca. Do you remember when we perved over the divers during Athens/USO '04 while my grandmother slept in her chair? Good times.

USA has to go down!!!!!!1 Hai Romania! Ha, now the gymnastics trials are on! Not too many hotties in the US mix this year. Thus, I will probably root for another country in this discipline. Swimming is by far the best. The second week (track and Other) is a big letdown after the brilliance of swimming/gymnastics in Week 1.

I don't really care this time. It will probably change when I start watching it non-stop, but still ... Are there any non-doping sports? Probably not.

You can probably do stuff in shooting too. Tranquilizers or anti-ADHD medication or whatever. Sailing, yeah. But sailing is so boring.

Well, if everyone is doped, it doesn't really mater, doesn't it? Besides, I don't think doping is rampant in all the sports. Athletics, gymnastics, swimming, those should be most likely suspects. And those are the most interesting sports, but what can you do.
I'm excited about these Olympics. Those time zones are making it difficult, but it's also a part of the charm.
