A couple of 75K+Hs this week: Toyota, JPN(1)Kurumi Nara (JPN) v Nudnida Luangnam (THA) Storm Sanders (AUS) v (Q)Kanae Hisami (JPN) (wc)Makoto Ninomiya (JPN) v Miyabi Inoue (JPN) (5)Sachie Ishizu (JPN) v (Q)Hiroko Kuwata (JPN) (4)Zarina Diyas (KAZ) v (wc)Haruka Kaji (JPN) Noppawan Lertcheewakarn (THA) v (Q)Akiko Yonemura (JPN) Junri Namigata (JPN) v Peangtarn Plipuech (THA) (8)Eri Hozumi (JPN) v Tamarine Tanasugarn (THA) (7)Qiang Wang (CHN) v (wc)Yuuki Tanaka (JPN) (Q)Emi Mutaguchi (JPN) v Miharu Imanishi (JPN) (wc)Miyu Kato (JPN) v Mari Tanaka (JPN) (3)Luksika Kumkhum (THA) v Nao Hibino (JPN) (6)Belinda Bencic (SUI) v Su Jeong Jang (KOR) Ksenia Lykina (RUS) v So-Ra Lee (KOR) Shuko Aoyama (JPN) v Misa Eguchi (JPN) (2)Misaki Doi (JPN) v Mi Yoo (KOR) - Surprised Tammy showed up. She hasn't played singles since August, and didn't enter any of the Asian swing despite being ranked high enough at the time, and has now fallen to 297. I thought she'd retired - Kumkhum is a couple of easy-on-paper wins away from the top 100. Get it girl - Surprised Bencic hasn't reached her quota of tournaments but she's only a win or two away from the top 200Sharm el Sheikh, EGY(1)Kaia Kanepi (EST) v Reka-Luca Jani (HUN) Melanie Klaffner (AUT) v Jovana Jaksic (SRB) (Q)Raluca Olaru (ROU) v (Q)Nastja Kolar (SLO) (7)Nina Bratchikova (RUS) v Valeria Solovyeva (RUS) (3)Yulia Putintseva (KAZ) v (wc)Fatma Al Nabhani (OMA) Andreea Mitu (ROU) v Anne Schaefer (GER) (wc)Yuliya Kalabina (RUS) v (Q)Daniela Seguel (CHI) (5)Tadeja Majeric (SLO) v Tereza Smitkova (CZE) (8)Kristina Kucova (SVK) v Alla Kudryavtseva (RUS) Paula Cristina Goncalves (BRA) v (JE)Katerina Siniakova (CZE) Victoria Kan (RUS) v Amra Sadikovic (SUI) (4)Estrella Cabeza-Candela (ESP) v (Q)Karin Morgosova (SVK) (6)Alexandra Panova (RUS) v (wc)Pauline Payet (FRA) Kristina Barrois (GER) v Alberta Brianti (ITA) (SR)Evgeniya Rodina (RUS) v Timea Bacsinszky (SUI) (2)Patricia Mayr-Achleitner (AUT) v (wc)Marina Shamayko (RUS) - Kaia here She's played so little this year I guess more match play can't hurt - Siniakova won a Polish 25K on indoor carpet last week - wonder how she'll deal with the surface change to clay - Putintseva and Star Candle Head both playing for AO direct entry - Hoping for Kan and Smitkova to have good showings

Everything progressing largely as expected in the 75K R1s apart from Diyas sadly retiring injured and Star Candle Head losing to Morgosova (!). Siniakova's R1 win, plus her 25K trophy last week, will lift her over Barty to become the second-highest ranked 1996 girl. I don't think I've read a thing about her or how she plays, but starting the year outside the top 1000 and 11 months later being firmly inside the top 200 is really impressive.
In the Bucha 25K, Countess Kathinka Von Deichmann scored a nice R1 win over 4th seed Grymalska. And Elizaveta Kulichkova, who's spent the past few months being the hot young thing in the Hidden World, was beaten by someone even younger - 16-year-old Tayisiya Morderger, of Germany.
A brief note from 10K land - Ines Ibbou, the 14-year-old Algerian who won her first ever pro tournament a few months ago, is back. She still hasn't lost a set on the senior tour - she's into the QF in a Spanish 10K. However, she now plays top seed Olga Saez Larra, who won a 10K last week, so the streak might well end here...

Thanks for the Ibbou update! Sadly, she did lose in the QFs 26 46, still a respectable outing for the kid. Too bad she couldn't have won, though, just for the chance to face a player named "Payola". Back in SES r2, things have gone awry for poor Kaia, but Putin's back on track: Jovana Jaksic (SCREAMING SRB) d. (1)Kaia Kanepi (EST) 36 64 63 (Q)Nastja Kolar (SLO) d. Valeria Solovyeva (RUS) 62 62 (3)Yulia Putintseva (KAZ) d. Andreea Mitu (ROU) 64 76(4) (wc)Yuliya Kalabina (RUS) d. Tereza Smitkova (CZE) 63 21 Ret. (JE)Katerina Siniakova (CZE) d. (2)Patricia Mayr-Achleitner (AUT) 61 63 Toyota was low on surprises: (1)Kurumi Nara (JPN) d. Storm Sanders (AUS) 63 64 (Q)Hiroko Kuwata (JPN) d. (wc)Makoto Ninomiya (JPN) 63 75 Noppawan Lertcheewakarn (THA) d. (wc)Haruka Kaji (JPN) 75 62 (8)Eri Hozumi (JPN) d. Junri Namigata (JPN) 64 64 Miharu Imanishi (JPN) d. And more good news for Countess fans: another win in Bucha. Fought back from an 0-6 start, if the TF scores are correct. Pas mal!

More foreign players should come to play these big JPN challengers. You only have to beat a bunch of horribly overranked Japanese to lift a 50/75k title and stack up on points for the next 10 months. One month of Japan is all that players ranked from 300 to 400 need to get themselves into the top 200 and GS Q territory.

The trouble is, some do go there with that plan in mind, and then they end up losing early. At least when Bratchikova loses early in the Nigerian 25s, she's not spending much money on lodgings (presumably), whereas, from what I understand, Japan is a danged expensive place to be. Speaking of Nina B.: after leaving Nigeria, where she lost in r2 and then, the following week, in the final, she has lost in r1 three weeks in a row, in Istanbul, in Dubai, and in Egypt. That's a lot of travel for 0 points, Nina! Just go home. Kumkhum, woohoo!

Kumkhum into the Toyota final In the past 14 months she's scored wins over all the hyped juniors - Bouchard, Keys, now Bencic. She faces Hiroko Kuwata, who a few months ago nearly beat Kleybanova in a 10K... Vika Kan into the Sharm el Sheikh final vs. a resurgent Nastja Kolar.

Kumkhum and Kan! So rarely do we have a week of such happy results in the hidden world.

Kumkhum won the title Her biggest title and well inside the top 100 - nice cushion for the points she has to defend at the start of 2014. 16-year-old Anhelina Kalinina has made the Bucha 25K final as a WC - she's really come on strong over the past couple of months, definitely established as the third best 1997 girl behind the more-hyped Bencic and Konjuh.

Surprisingly, an interesting QF line-up in the only 25K this week, in Monterrey:
Francoise Abanda (CAN) d. Petra Uberalova (SVK) 62 62 (6)Allie Kiick (USA) d. Laura Pigossi (BRA) 61 61 (4)Mayo Hibi (JPN) d. Laura-Ioana Andrei (ROU) 61 60 (8)Indy De Vroome (NED) d. Barbara Bonic (SRB) 60 62
(5)Adriana Perez (VEN) d. (Q)Karina Kristina Vyrlan (USA) 62 62 (3)Florencia Molinero (ARG) d. (Q)Yan Wang (CHN) 63 61 (7)Chieh-Yu Hsu (USA) d. (Q)Francesca Segarelli (DOM) 63 75 Naomi Osaka (JPN) d. (2)Maria Irigoyen (ARG) 64 60
On a related note, I read that insanely, Hibi has chosen the college route. I assume she's playing here to confirm her AO qualifying spot anyway, I don't know when she begins? But I don't know why, when you're the fifth best U18 player in the world, you'd give that up. She's as assured of making a decent pro living as you can be. Disappointing, especially with her game, which would have been a real breath of fresh air...

Yeah, I like those QFs a lot. Nice to see de Vroome is starting to gain some traction. As for Hibi, well, I don't see how it can hurt her to attend UCLA. She can always quit after a year or two if wants to. Must be nice to have all the options!

Everyone's favorite MADwoman reached the final in the Fes 10K this week, but, sadly, she couldn't quite get it done:

I was hoping for a Hibi/Osaka final Disappointing losses. De Vroome has had inconsistent results but she is good though. (But she lost to Perez in the final.)

According to someone at TF, Indy led 64 30, and then 64 46 20. Oops! So maybe she choked it away -- but I prefer to think of it as an impressive show of strength from VEN.

Uberalova is 18, in her first year out of juniors she's gone from unranked to top 400 (when these points are added) since Jan, she won a German 25K a few months ago. That's all I know. Looks worth keeping half an eye on but not getting too excited about.
