Wow, I thought Fujiwara had retired.
18-year-old Rebecca Peterson, a Swede with a pretty un-Swedish name, won both of the last fortnight's MEX 25Ks. On a winning streak of 20 including two SWE 10Ks in October.
Last year, Savic beat Puig in the Ankara final...this year, the latter has played Slam second weeks and reached the top 50, whereas the former will fall to the lower end of the top 400 after those points come off.

With some of the players in these late-year ITFs, you look at the draw and think "why are you there?" And you get the impression that they feel the same way when you see these results.
If you're not going to Australia they're helpful though, many Europe-based sub-200 players will get most of Jan/Feb off.
Interesting to see Diatchenko back!
In Mexico, Tomljanovic is bizarrely top seed in the 25K - I think this may be a case of starting 2014 early rather than finishing 2013 late...
Just noticed that last week we got our third born-1998-or-later girl ITF winner after Ibbou and Black: Shilin Xu took the Hong Kong 10K.

Diatchenko won the Ankara 50K, beating Sirotkina 6-7 6-4 6-4 in the final. Impressive after a 15-month lay-off. Contender for comeback player of 2014, maybe? Tomljanovic somehow lost the MEX 25K final to Kiick Xu won her second consecutive HK 10K. Wonder if CHN has finally found another promising talent...

Disappointing that Valentini Grammatikopoulou and Naomi Osaka lost in Vero Beach qualies. I'm very intrigued as to how good they are, and whether skipping juniors will pay off for them.

Entertaining reports from TF poster Aravanecaravan:
Today was a great day at the Tesoro Club. Francoise Abanda, as her Mom politely corrected with a warm smile toward me when the emcee butchered her name in the post-match interview, played well enough to win today against Mircic, who inexplicably had a mental meltdown after very narrowly losing the first set (gave up a couple set points) and while leading 4-1 in the second set she yelled violently in Serbian, threw her racquet into the ground AND kicked it all in the same motion. Never seen that one before! That's even got Vaidisova and Zahlavova Strycova beat, I think.
As for the tennis, it wasn't particularly high quality stuff in this match, apart from Mircic's theatrics. Lots of errors. I thought Abanda would have a bigger game than she does. It's OK, for 16 yo, but she will need to get stronger , server better and hit much bigger if she wants to compete at a higher level, IMHO. She and her mother seem like very nice, sweet people though. After awhile, they came to watch the second match, perhaps to cheer for Heidi, scout their next opponent, or a little of both.
El Tabakh-Sigemund would have been over in about 50 minutes if not for the 50+ drop shots Sigemund hit. No shit--this is not an exaggeration--I would conservatively say that over half of Sigemund's points won in this match were from drop shots. It was cute for awhile, maybe a set and a half, but when it became clear that it was just about the only way she could win a point off of Heidi, it looked more like a sideshow. Sigemund also got so violently mad at 1-4, serving in set 3 over two consecutive line calls that I thought she was going to have a stroke or aneurysm when she won the next point and yelled three somethings very loud. Heidi served beautifully in set 3, coming up with the goods under pressure to close out the set after a long and contentious 6th game which was finally won by Sigemund after Heidi had several BPs. That could have been a big change in momentum, but Heidi came up with two huge serve games to close it out.
Too bad Mircic didn't play Siegemund. Two maniacs out there at the same time would have been even more fun.

Abanda won. Nice to see her making up ground after being out for most of last year. She could well belong in the same conversation as Konjuh and Bencic soon.

That was one of the easier R1s for Black.
