ZOMG, look at King's and Great Arn's pictures on livescore website. I know, lulz. RLJ actually came into the net! She could make Top 20 just from that alone.

What is Sloane Stephens' game like?

An odd mixture of brute power (when behind) and endless moonballs (when ahead). She beat RLJ in the final-set TB. Poor RLJ, that was a great draw at a major, doubt she'll get a chance like this again. Oh, Burt Reynolds. I find you heart-stoppingly hunky.

I watched the second set of RLJ/Stephens then fell asleep, and woke up handily at 5-5. Jani struck me as the way more resourceful and talented player at all times...her BH is a real weapon, she's adept at switching up pace and angles on her groundies, as Hurley noted she's fond of sneaking into the net, and she was the one looking to set up virtually every rally. That was a real missed opportunity for her, and not just because she served for it.
First time watching Stephens and I'm underwhelmed. I might have been asleep while she was displaying brute power because I definitely didn't see anything of it.
LOL, Lee Na. Hurley's right, Slams are as devalued as No 1 now.

There can't be too many USOs where the winners of all that year's majors are gone by the end of the 1st round.

There can't be too many USOs where the winners of all that year's majors are gone by the end of the 1st round. It would be fun if it were only one of those years where I hated that year's Slam titlists! Still, it makes me realize again how lucky we were the way RG and Wimby ended on the women's side. Can't have 4 fun surprise endings in one year, I suppose.

To the Culters: Why does Ivanovic, after more than 3 years without reaching a Slam QF, still get star treatment and stadium court slots? Not a rhetorical question. I'm genuinely by this. Because Nole's whipping boy quit early and they needed to fill time. Wimbledon does this more often. BAG was originally scheduled for the Grandstand, which was actually fair, and more of a sign that there aren't any upcoming USians worth a shit whom usually got those slots.

I don't like to see Nadal sailing so close to the wind in a first-round match, though. Is men's tennis becoming the new women's tennis?
But anyway he's escaped so far.

I didn't know Golubev's year has been so dreadful. You wouldn't know it based on how he played today. Seems like he tries to hit the ball just a WEE bit too hard. Also, insane amounts of choking.
It was interesting to see how he did with a one-handed backhand against Rafa. Pretty good. I don't ever remember watching Roger hit backhand winners like that against Rafa.

It's been a rough year for the Faux Kazakhs. Korolev fell off the earth, and Golubev has hardly won any matches this year. OTOH, Voskoboeva rising from outside the top 500 to probably end the year at a career high. Retire, Anne K Choking against the most useless player in the top 100. (Apart from YOURSELF, that is.)

For the same reason that Kournikova did? Plus, it's not like there's a surfeit of superstars who transcend the sport, so may as well go with someone who looked like she might be good once. First of all, BAG wasn't initially on Ashe, though I think she was scheduled for the Grandstand, so it still basically holds. Next, the HAWT factor: did that ever really pan out? I feel like the media/SEWTA always told everyone that they should think she's hot, and yet...really, I'm not sure the majority of people did. And when you look at the previous bonafide SEWTA Sexxx Symbols (Kournikova, Hantuchova...aaaaaaand I'm out), Ivanovic doesn't really fit, does she? I really don't think she is what many straight men (for they are the Sex Symbols targets) are looking for. Finally, it just comes down to Alex's other point: as far as name recognition, unfortunately, she's one of the most recognizable they have on the women's side. It helped that (a) she has, to her credit, both WON SLAM and REACHED #1, which doesn't seem to happen anymore, and (b) achieved both of those things right at the tail end of the time when either really mattered, particularly the top ranking. As much as Wozniacki is doing a disservice to the top ranking, one has to say that Schiavone, Li, Kvitova, and even Clijsters are making Slam-winning look irrelevant by not backing it up. Now, Li and Kvitova in particular should get some leeway here, but...but... If being #1 won't get you respect... And winning Slams won't get you respect... Really, what exactly is going to save this sport? To my mind, and I said it a couple of weeks ago, it really is going to take at least one semi-dominant player -- not even a "star" per se, but a benchmark, a figurehead for the sport. Justine was no glamour girl and a lot of people disliked her, but when she was on top, everyone knew where they stood, and, consequently, the sport. Now we have a peer of Gambale the Wall at #1 and a coterie of BBBs winning majors and then chumping up for months. It's not pretty. I hadn't looked at it this way. I'm inclined to agree with this and present it as my point of view now. For all the talk of the #1 ranking not meaning anything today, winning a Slam doesn't mean much either, does it? Thank you.

Funny, Golubev reminds me a bit of Korolev. Looks talented, but lots of tactical lapses and mental midgetry.
