To me, that's the most surprising result in a slam final in years. Probably since Sharapova beat Serena at Wimbledon.

hahahahaha! I missed it! Went out on a walk. D'oh! Anyway, this time, it was Sam who got to be Franny, the fighting underdog. Good on her! Sorry I missed it!

Dinara is fighting tears just watching this! Serena is LYING lol. Reminding that 6 months ago she was in a hospital and she never thought she'd be here this day blah blah when previously she claimed she expected to win Wimbledon on her return.

It's not surprising that Serena is acting like this. Two years ago she was also super nice to Kim and all "All we are saying is give peace a chance" at the press conference.

Serena on the incident: "I hit a winner, I guess it didn't count" (during the speech)
Does she know what a winner is?

Serena should be thankful, now she has an eternal excuse for this loss. All thanks to Eva.

"I thought it was the same as the hat rule....I guess I need to read up on the rulebook" -- Serena to MJF You've only been on tour for 14 years, Serena. In your own time. Funny how she knew about the hand rule though.

WTAW died, as expected. Denise isn't too inspired, unfortunately, this is the best she came up with: "Well @usoopen did everything w/in its power to keep Serena from winning this title. From having her up past 2am to taking game"

I think that USOpen scheduling actually caught up with Serena. Her late match last night probably had an effect. She's not that young anymore. She looked flat and tired and slow right from the beginning.

She's had matches like this before, for no apparent reason. Like the AO '05 final, until Lindsay checked out mentally. Or the QF in '08 where she just kept sucking until it was GSM, JJ. She probably would have found a way to beat most of the SEWTA even playing like this. But Sam just never let her into the match. I never thought it would happen like that.

I think if Sam had to attempt to serve it out, we might still be going. Fortunately for her, she did not need to.

OMG!!! Thats never happened before!!! Except to Bartoli, the other day. It happened to Justine too. I think against Sweta at some YEC? Or maybe Woz at IW? My memory is not what it was vs Woz at Miami last year. Henin shouted "Allez!" before the ball (which was a clean winner for her) bounced and IIRC got docked the point for hindrance. Everyone just laughed (then again it wasn't an important point). @benrothenberg Ben Rothenberg Eva Asderaki was not the chair umpire against Clijsters in 2009 (Cramer) or more likely, Capriati in 2004 (Alves). Serena confusing blondes. Engzell, not Cramer. Last year after the RG final, after Stosur had one of the most remarkable Slam runs in recent years only to bottle it within sight of the finish line, I thought "Only chance to win this big you'll ever get - gone." Happy for Stosur (even though I only hopped into her bandwagon very late - Charleston 2010, like a few others - after rabidly hating her for a couple of seasons before that), particularly as she was bold to the point of recklessness today. Good to see. Dementieva's decision to retire and stop pursuing a Slam win becomes more inexplicable with each passing Slam.
