I am completely certain that had Demented stuck at it, she would still be Slamless.

Dinara is fighting tears just watching this! Serena is LYING lol. Reminding that 6 months ago she was in a hospital and she never thought she'd be here this day blah blah when previously she claimed she expected to win Wimbledon on her return. We take Serena for granted because she's 1000x better than SEWTA, but a pulmonary embolism is some serious stuff. She probably was out of it for quite a while, and it's something that can kill you. Oh, and how the hell did she lose to Stosur.

I missed Serena/Eva Asderaki drama? Of course, today is the day I have to do stuff.

Ok, Eva clearly made the right call, what on earth was Serena thinking there. Even if Sam couldn't get a racket on that, she technically should lose the point via obstruction. Johnny Mac calling for a let, dude shut up. Why does CBS make him announce SEWTA.
I think Ree just acted after that for intimidation purposes because she was flatter than a board, and she was an idiot.

It happened to Justine too. I think against Sweta at some YEC? Or maybe Woz at IW? My memory is not what it was vs Woz at Miami last year. Henin shouted "Allez!" before the ball (which was a clean winner for her) bounced and IIRC got docked the point for hindrance. Everyone just laughed (then again it wasn't an important point). www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNhQzDFQPtIUmpire was also Asderaki. The point in which "everyone just laughed" was Serena vs Sveta at some YEC. People on Twitter saying that the rule is different on WTA and ITF events: WTA - play a let; ITF - "hindered" player given the point.

Common sense dictates that you must give the point. Why not scream after every defensive shot.

Why not scream after every defensive shot. Ooh. Now THAT would be a fun sport to watch.

Q. Your mom's here? GRACE MIN: Yeah, mom's here.
Q. What did she say to you afterwards? GRACE MIN: I don't even know if it was words. It was mostly like sounds, like... (Making sounds.)
Q. You didn't have a big celebration. You didn't sort of fall to your knees or anything like that. GRACE MIN: Oh, my gosh. No. No.
Q. That's not you? GRACE MIN: I was like -- I thought about it for like a second, and I was like, no, you can't think about that. You haven't even won yet. Yeah, so stuff like that, thinking about that makes me nervous. And who wants to plan like a way to win? It has to be natural.
Q. So your natural was just a little fist pump? GRACE MIN: Yeah. I'm not like a huge -- I don't show a whole lot of emotion, so that was as good as it gets.

This US Open won't be holding a special place in my heart. I only saw Skippers choke against Schivone, FSG's travesty of a game and Stosur winning it in the end. I'd prefer Serena.

Oh god Serena now kissing up to Sam. So phony. It was soooooooooooo phony. Q. Shortly after the match Serena came over and sat down next to you in the chair. Were you surprised she did that? Looked like you were having a friendly chat. What were you talking about? SAMANTHA STOSUR: All of a sudden, yeah, turned around and she was right next to me, which is kind of unusual. No, she was great, actually. She just said, How do you feel? Are you really excited? It's unbelievable. I played really well. Yeah, I was really surprised to, you know, see her sitting next to me at that moment in time. I guess it, you know, shows what a nice person she is and what a true champion she is of the sport. To be able to separate the result a few minutes later and be able to come over and congratulate your opponent I thought was pretty classy.

I was about to say that the rule that needs to be clarified, but it actually seems pretty clear. Shouting "Come on" is definitely a deliberate act. The rule doesn't say that the act has to be committed with the intention of hindering, just that the act itself is deliberate. Anyway, Silliams.

When you force umps to make the call that is something is "deliberate" with these spoiled players, it's never clear. Good job by beautiful-on-the-outside.

Yup, Asderaki handled everything really well. She made the right call AND she didn't overreact when Bratty was a brat. She sat there and took it and gave her the code violation. Didn't get Earley involved, didn't fight back...just dealt with it. A+.

Putting Serena's latest tantrum aside, just wondering if any of the Sam-haters on this board changed their views on her and her game this week. I have to say that although I liked her before, from the Kirilenko match onward I kept liking her more and more. It was like watching her chokey head clearing up one match at a time, right before our eyes. Loved seeing this development and just wonder if those who disilked her, and I forget what your reasons were, have a better opinion of her now or not.

Awww. She looks so much better in natural, makeup-free mode. Awful what they force these women to do.

Even the conventionally pretty girls of SEWTA tend to fail when it comes to glam shoots and make-up. I don't know why any of them try, it never ends well.

It's still fugly even when it's effective. Were it not for Serena's behaviour I doubt I'd be happy about this. And she seems perfectly nice in a no-nonsense bordering on boring way, but...long-standing associations with those doubles bitches mitigate against support too. I think her chokey tendencies have been exaggerated. It's so easy for her to start spraying with her technique, not just out of nerves. And for ages she's shown that same thing that Kvitova did at Wimbledon - to completely put mini-chokes behind her and win anyway. Seriously, that Kirilenko match, with how she lost the second set. There are like three players on SEWTA who wouldn't have cried and been bagelled in the third.

Sam can hang around against anyone with her serve, and the draw broke her way. Her BH is still bad and she goes through spurts of shanks and errors. And I don't understand where the choker mentality came from. The RG final, I guess, but that wasn't a choke. Sam is basically a robot out there.

Also, that RG final was mostly about Fran transcending herself. Stosur played average, not her A game, but it's not like she pulled a Demented or Safina out there. She had the kind of level that Sweta beat Dinara with the previous year.

Serena got fined $2K. That's like a nickel to you and me, but in line with fines resulting from code violations.

My favourite way of describing Sam was when Alex, on this board a few years ago, referred to her as an Antipodean with a passing familiarity for grass.
edit: I think it was "for" grass, not "on" it ;D
