Its a good enough start if shes going play regularly. She didn't just give in when she went 0-3 down.

Promising start. She won a match, and put in a solid effort against a top 200 player. Now, just try to play again this year.

We know she'll play Dothan in 2 months. Maybe this was just her warm-up for it.

I was pleasantly surprised with this effort. I hope she can make something of this and build upon it.

rtael's match report c/p from wtaworld:Hey guys...just got back from Memphis and I promised to type a little report, esp. for Mirjana so here goes... I arrived about ten o'clock and got onto the courts about halfway through the warmup of Mirjana and Grandin. Let me say first of all that Mirjana looked GOOD. She was completely in shape....really, not an *ounce* of fat. Grandin wasn't big or anything but Mirjana definitely looked skinny next to her. So let there be no doubts that she is at least comitted to her fitness. Now the match...well...I wasn't horribly impressed...until I thought about the fact that this is her second match in like a year. I never really saw her at her prime but I don't think she's hitting as hard as she used to, but she was certainly hitting harder than Grandin. The first set was mostly a story of Mirjana's backhand...way too many errors on that side, and Grandin seemed to be playing to it a lot, though that may just be because she's a lefty. In set #2 Mirjana finally started to be able string a good number of points together, instead of just one error, one winner. The third set was just a kind of bad start and never really recovered. Grandin was definitely not a good match-up for Mirjana just because of the way she plays, but the simple fact is Natalie was the better player today and that's why she won. If anyone has some specific questions about this match, I can try to answer them. I have detailed match stats below: Lucic Grandin BH winners: 21 3 fh winners: 14 2 Doube faults: 10 2 Aces: 11 1 Serve Winners: 13 2 BH errors (all errors, not divided by unforced or forced): 37 12 fh errors: 33 14 Volley winners: 5 2 Volley errors: 3 0 Winner/Error Differential -20 (counting serve winners, but not aces) -17 I talked to Mirjana for a second after the match and told her that there were a lot of people who were happy that she was playing and wanted to see her do well. She was very nice and signed the back of my sweatshirt. I meant to ask where her next tournament would be, but forgot. Please forgive me! I'm glad rtael didn't tell Mirjana about Brinyi rooting against her!

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but isn't Grandin one of the least fit players on Tour, actually?

Willow, why are using the tape smilie? Because it's a glmaour photo of Lucic? Mirjana looks different now than she did a few years ago. I guess she wants a more mature look. But the main thing is for her to be happy and away from her troublesome father.

She's been awarded a WC into the MD of IW. That's a huge break for Mirjana. I hope she takes advantage of it.

She does look good, I was just a bit shocked by the Pam Anderson hair and flash of bra. Heres Mirjana training hard for her three set loss to the world #628.

Ah! Thanks for posting that, Willow. I tried to post it a couple days ago and it didn't work. She definitely looks fit, and I like the fact that she's flying in the air. (yes, I'm ignoring the 'three set loss" part of the post )

Mirjana wins her first match since Wimbledon qualies 2003, and I win £18, which is the first Real Actual Money I've won betting on tennis. Thats how Optimistic I really was.

True optimism = if you bet real money on her to win her NEXT match. Still, congrats on the £18 win. You owe her, now ...

Eurosport has an article about her today. She's got a coach, and she's hoping to get WTA wc's. I hope that doesn't mean she plans to stay away from the challengers altogether, but maybe it'll depend on how many wc's she can snag, and how far she can bring her ranking back up.

She's been awarded a WC into the MD of IW. That's a huge break for Mirjana. I hope she takes advantage of it. I don't like quoting myself. But will in this instance. I'm pleased Mirjana took advantage of her Indian Wells wild card and won her first round match in Indian Wells 2007. Now she plays the very skilled and tricky Anna Chakedatze in the second round. I hope Lucic can use her tremendous size and power advantage in this match and can make an impression of Anna's game.

She does look good, I was just a bit shocked by the Pam Anderson hair and flash of bra. Heres Mirjana training hard for her three set loss to the world #628. Mirjana looks to be in great shape and even seems somewhat streamlined compared to her former physique. Lucic has seen how other WTA players have successfully marketed themselves and she wants to do the same with her new streamlined glamourous look. Now comes the tough part for her. Winning matches and becomeing a good WTA player again. P.S. - Willow, did I spell glamourous right? If I recall correctly you are very good with spelling.

Huh? I don't think Mirjana's thinking AT ALL about "marketing herself" right now. She's got so much to concentrate on: shopping for WCs /improving her game / finding sponsorship / battling IMG. Like Justine, she HAD TO get fit in order to play the game at a high level, not to market herself as yet another tennis Barbie.

Does anyone have the full article on tennisreporters? I don't have a subscription but I want to read all about the crying and stuff. Hurrah for Miki.
