Maybe not whined about their ranking, but dismissed the notion that they're really ranked that low.
I'd prefer the Willies were more like Mirjana, actually. If you don't want to play, then don't. At all.

Exactly. Like Serena talking about being the real number one, and Venus finding her true passion in fashion, and Serena in being a whore, or whatever. And that tennis is secondary to those activities. But instead of actually going out and playing for that top ranking, they play eight tournaments a year, and then wonder why they find themselves outside the top ten.

No, Venus and Serena don't ever "wonder why they find themselves outside the top ten". They know why. And I don't care if Serena constantly claims she's the best player out there; it obviously works for her to think that way. It's the fact that the entire world media completely buys into those words that bugs me. The media, at least in the US, including tennis tv commentators, seem to think of Venus and Serena as a couple of cartoon superheroes, who can win everything on earth "if they really want it". That's why I was rooting against the US team yesterday. Venus was there, she wanted it, and yet <gasp!!> she LOST!!! Yes, world, she is only a human being after all! Still, if it had been Serena and not Venus, she would have found some way to put a spin on it that would still leave her at the top of the world heap, like she did so successfully at Roland Garros after losing dismally to the actual world #1. And the US media would have bought into it, hook, line and sinker. It's a real talent, that, even if not an attractive one.

Maybe not whined about their ranking, but dismissed the notion that they're really ranked that low. I'd prefer the Willies were more like Mirjana, actually. If you don't want to play, then don't. At all. Hey, if you could play five tournaments a year, practicing for a week or two before each tournament, and still win a Slam doing that, you'd do it. Anyone would. It's as annoying to me as it is to most people (I'm not counting deranged people who despise everything about these women). Seriously, I really, really wish Serena and Venus could not swan in, out of shape as like as not, and *win Slams*, and then swan out again for a few months -- but obviously they CAN, and so they do. If you step back and look at it objectively, it's almost unbelievable what they can do -- annoying, but incredible.

What happened to Lucic after playing some good tennis early in the year? It seems like she's gone away again.

She apparently tried and failed to get a WC for Wimbledon. That's the last that's been heard from her.

She apparently tried and failed to get a WC for Wimbledon. That's the last that's been heard from her. No, it was the music festival, remember? We've heard from Mirjana again. She's deeply affected by what the newspapers wrote about her when she suddenly left Croatia after her pompous comeback, and she's so stressed out that she can't think about playing again right now. She asked some Croatian businessman to help her with money and he agreed to do so, if she comes back to Croatia to train and live there. She's not ready for that yet, so she declined. She doesn't want to return there until she has won a tournament. She wants to come back to her country as a champion!

Why does she still have so many fans? Stevenson also had one good Wimbledon, is at least as deranged as Lucic, and continues to entertain us by playing/retiring several times during the year instead of just showing up to Dothan every once in a while to play half a match. Where's her cheering thread?

It's a bit of a mystery why she still has so many fans.
Especially given how many hard hitting players there are now. The world doesn't need Lucic.

Because at the time, Mirjana hit harder than everyone. She's also pretty cute, especially now.

Plus, she gets the sympathy vote - with good reason, really...obviously these recent events are but she has to be pretty messed up. There's more general goodwill in the attention she gets than, say, Stevenson, who is just a Whitehead-esque punchline these days. I think people want Mirjana to succeed, whether she herself does or not, and they also want to be able to say "I was there" in the eventuality of any genuine comeback.

I was the same when the other one was at her 10th of 14124 withdrawals.
You just need Mirjana to do this more than like 2 times a year.

Midland is a great place to start, IF she really wants to start. She's got to take advantage of her ranking right now, before all her WC points from last year fall off. Apparently her latest disappearance was related to something sinister to do with her Dad, in Croatia. But I don't care why she disappeared, again. I just want her to PLAY REGULARLY, OR NOT PLAY AT ALL, and stop with this Dokic-like "will-she/won't she" nonsense. Where is Dokic, by the way? Back in Zagreb, home of her past greatness, of course.

She's in the Midland Q draw. Starts against young USian QWC Allie Will.

Lucic d. Allie Will 6-4 6-3.
She plays Mashona Washington next.
It's 2008, right.

I hope Lucic is really on the road back. There are some good comeback stories in women's tennis and hope Lucic is one of them. But I have my doubts even though Mirjana beating Mashona Washington in the Midland, Michigan challenger is a good win for her.

Not really, cat. Poor Mashona is having a difficult comeback after surgery. Her win in Qr1 was her first singles win this year, and she's had a couple of really dismal losses.

Good news: Mirjana won 2 matches in one week, something she was unable to achieve in last year's comeback attempt.
Bad news: ITF site says Mirjana's coach is the one and only, Lifetime-Banned from the WTA pervert, Joe Guiliano. I hope this is really, really old info.

The ITF site never updates that stuff. It still says Giuliano is Bovina's coach.

No, I don't. I like Mirjana, whenever she's actually playing. I like her a lot more this year than last year, because this year she's keeping her mouth shut and playing challengers instead of giving interviews and waiting around for sponsorship and WTA WCs. I love players like Rolle and Pandzic that grind and battle their own way through without agents and managers finagling wc's for them. Pandzic had just 1 WC all last year -- for Bronx qualies -- and yet she worked her way up from unranked to the top 250, starting out in 10K qualies only in late May, and only playing in the US. If Mirjana will do something similar, all on her own, I will respect her a lot.

Mirjana won twice today in Pelham qualies. First she beat some bumpkinette 60 60, then she took out Miss Anna Tatishvili, author of the upcoming bestseller My Journey: From Tier I Diva to 25K Qualy Loser in Six Days!, in 3 sets. Trouble is, this being a 25K, Mirjana still won't earn a single ranking point unless she wins one more match. That will probably be against Kim Couts, who is neither very bad nor very good. I hope Mirjana will not be too 'd to take on this challenge tomorrow.

Mirjana qualified. A Croatian fan of hers over at wtaworld said this is the first time in 5 1/2 YEARS (since the 2002 US Open) that Mirjana aka "Miki" has won 3 matches in a row. Talk about re-starting from the ground up!

There hasn't been a lot of tournaments in that span.
Oh, and the match after that 3-match winning streak, she was double bageled.
