In this thread we will continue to believe she can achieve something worthwhile in her career.

Or not.

Well she sure got a lucky break in that Memphis Q draw. If she can't beat that kid, then it's going to be hard for even her guardian angel to be optimistic about her chances.
But I'm glad to see her back & I hope she succeeds.

Hey, Dothan isn't this week.
I'm confused.

And Mirjana beat that kid 1-6 6-3 6-3.
Oudin made the QF in a 25k earlier this year. So, at least Mirjana is good enough to be top 500.

Apparently Mirjana could barely win a point on serve for the first set and a half, then two aces and it was all plain sailing from there.
I'm so happy its quite disturbing.

I'm really happy, too. She must have been so nervous out there, and somehow, she pulled herself together and got through it. What a relief (for her and for us) to get that first win under her belt!

She'll probably play Grandin in the next match.
That's winnable...
The other seed in her section is hopeless Keothavong, so there's some hope.

She really could make it through this wafer-thin section. Which is very disturbing and Serena-esque.

Funny, yesterday I watched a Wimbledon video from 2000. At the end they were talking about the bright future of women's tennis, showing Lucic, Dokic, ...
Lucic played perfect tennis at Wimbledon 1999, the tie-break against Graf was simply amazing. I was disappointed that she messed up the match all by herself.
Sure, it would be nice if she came back, but I think we all know that this is very very unlikely.

I think we should promote a Lucic-Docic pay-per-pview exhibition.

It was very weird how close she came. Her early-round match against Seles is still one of the most engrossing matches I've ever seen.

Now that she has a win under her belt, I think she could make it into the MD. The confidence from a match win should do alot for her.

It's possible with this draw.
However, playing a match the next day is always the toughest...

I think its reasonable to imagine she might play more than once a year now shes actually won a match, though.

I'm talking about the doomsaying articles of 1-2 years ago. I didn't know she was even close to the radar since then.

Mirjana Lucic Stages Comeback In Memphis Qualifying Reporting From Onsite In Memphis, Tennessee By Tripp Mateschitz, Lawn Tennis Correspondent, Posted: Friday, February 16, 2006 3:30pm CST USA Q1: M. Lucic def. M. Oudin 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 MEMPHIS--At the Cellular South Cup in today's qualifying round one, Mirjana Lucic of Croatia defeated Melanie Oudin of the USA 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 in one hour and 11 minutes. Playing her signature style of all or nothing power baseline tennis, Lucic regrouped quickly after hitting a doublefault into the net on set point to lose the first set in only 12 minutes. Mirjana Lucic, who was once grouped together with Serena Williams and Anna Kournikova as future stars of the WTA Tour made a rare appearance on the tennis court today looking much fitter than in recent years. Dressed in a one piece white polo shirt type dress over dark blue Adidas biker shorts, Lucic appeared lean and mean hitting extremely hard groundstrokes to oftentimes either overpower Oudin or lose the point only due to her own error. On the changeovers Lucic seemed to be fighting a cold; blowing her nose and eye dropping her eyes, but on the court she was all business; ripping crosscourt forehand winners at ease with a mix of "come on"s and fist pumps. Playing almost exclusively short points, Lucic found herself up setpoint in set two only 38 minutes into the match. Another huge Lucic forehand crosscourt forced an error in the net from Oudin and the set was Lucic's. In set three Lucic mixed dropshots and winning net play into her game as her confidence seemed to soar. Lucic held then broke to go ahead 3-0. Moving a foot or more inside the baseline to punish second serves, Lucic scored return winners or her returns floated long. A flurry of forehand and backhand winners later, Mirjana unleashed two aces to save breakpoints up 5-3. Lucic ended the match hitting down the line winners from her forehand and backhand followed by a huge smile and celebration. Is Lucic back from the brink? It could be with the amazing power tennis she played today, but only time will time for sure. In round two Saturday, Lucic plays the winner of the Natalie Gradin/Story Tweedie-Yates match which is being played on court now. www.lawntennismag.com/memphis2007/mirjana-lucic1.html

Thanks, Willow! The amazing forehand is expected, but dropshots! winning net play! I hope she can turn this into a real comeback because I'd love to see her play again. Not so thrilled with the "come on"s, but there's no putting that one back in the bottle.

You need to take one zero out of 500 and that's what Lucic can achieve ranking wise in the next year. :)From what I've seen recently Lucic is in fine shape which will help her win the tough matches she will face on her comeback trail. Udachi Mirjana! Now I usually reserve udachi for the Russina's only. But in Mirjana's case it's needed.

Mirjana Lucic is as momentum driven a tennis player as I've ever seen. If Lucic could ever become more consistent she would start drilling most of these challenger girls. And that's what Mirjana should be doing to most of them once she gets the rust off her game.
